Security & Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a second form of verification in addition to your password.

Available Methods

Use apps like Google Authenticator, Authy, or 1Password to generate time-based codes. This method works offline and is the most secure option.

Setup Process:

  1. Navigate to Settings → Multi-Factor Authentication
  2. Click "Add TOTP authentication"
  3. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app
  4. Enter the 6-digit code to complete enrollment
  5. Check your email for a confirmation message with a removal link (in case this was done in error)

Popular Authenticator Apps:

App Type Platforms Features
Google Authenticator Standalone iOS, Android Simple, reliable, Google Account sync
Proton Authenticator Standalone iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux Privacy-focused, encrypted sync, open source
Apple Passwords Platform-Native iOS, macOS Built into iOS/macOS, iCloud Keychain sync

SMS Authentication

Receive verification codes via text message to your phone. Requires a valid phone number and cellular service.

Setup Process:

  1. Navigate to Settings → Multi-Factor Authentication
  2. Enter your phone number in international format (e.g., +1234567890)
  3. Click "Add SMS authentication"
  4. Enter the verification code sent via SMS
  5. Check your email for a confirmation message with a removal link (in case this was done in error)

Best Practices

Security Recommendations

  • Use TOTP when possible: Authenticator apps are more secure than SMS and don't require cellular network
  • Keep backup codes safe: Store your backup codes in a secure location separate from your device
  • Use multiple platforms: Set up MFA on web and mobile for redundancy and convenience
  • Regular review: Periodically review and update your MFA settings

Managing Multiple Factors

  • Web Application: Can add and use multiple MFA factors
  • Mobile App: Can add and use multiple MFA factors
  • macOS Desktop: Can use multiple factors but can only add one at a time

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

Can't add second factor on macOS desktop app : The macOS desktop app can only add one factor at a time. To set up additional factors, use the web application or mobile app. Once added, you can use all your factors to log in from any platform.

TOTP codes not working : Ensure your device's time is synchronized. Check your authenticator app settings and verify the correct account is selected.

SMS codes not received : Check that your phone number is correct and you have cellular service. Try again after a few minutes. Contact support if the issue persists.

Lost access to MFA device : Use your backup codes to regain access, then set up MFA on a new device. Contact support if you don't have backup codes.

Recovery Options

If you lose access to your MFA device and don't have backup codes:

  1. Contact support with proof of identity
  2. Account recovery may take 24-48 hours for security verification
  3. Once recovered, immediately set up new MFA factors and save backup codes

Platform Limitations

macOS Desktop App - Setup Limitation

The macOS desktop app can only add one MFA factor at a time. However, you can still use multiple factors to log in if they were set up on other platforms (web or mobile app).

Example: If you set up both SMS and TOTP using the web app, you can log in with either method on the macOS desktop app.
